Outset Teacher Education is a collaboration between teacher educators and IT specialists. We design and provide e-portfolios to support teachers' professional development.
The genesis for Outset Teacher Education came via the Oxon-Bucks Partnership, which provided teacher training on the graduate teacher programme, overseas trained teacher programme, SCITT and Assessment Only QTS between 2003 and 2015. Neil Brading was its manager between 2004 and 2015. In 2006 the Partnership was successful in bidding to the TDA (Training and Development Agency for Schools) for funding to develop an online portfolio.
The Partnership commissioned Frazz Jarvis from Flux2fusion Software to undertake the software development. At the same time Neil wrote his Masters' dissertation focusing on how portfolios can be designed to support professional learning. His dissertation research informed the design of the system. The portfolio system was reviewed very positively by the TDA and subsequently Neil was invited to join the TDA ICT Advisory Group and speak at the NAACE conference in 2010.
Simon Lockwood was Senior Advisor at Buckinghamshire County Council and represented Buckinghamshire on the Partnership Steering Group. In 2015 Simon and Neil set up Outset Teacher Education and invited Frazz to design its portfolio system. Our Teachers' Standards portfolio was first used in 2016-17 and since then over 2000 trainee teachers have used it to support their professional development and address the Teachers' Standards at the highest level. In September 2018, in collaboration with the University of Buckingham we launched www.sencostandards.com, to help SENCos achieve the National Award for SEN Coordination. In June 2019 we introduced www.mentorstandards.com aimed at helping mentors involved in initial teacher education and early career development.
We are happy to offer free consultation to help you build a system that meets your needs.
